The Ikea Catalog
15 November 2001It may look like a photo shoot out of an Ikea catalog, but it really is cleverSPIN’s official office space. Located in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, the 350sf space is filled with color and, yes, Ikea furniture.
The Rug is Available for $24.95.
The small design shop is equipped with conference space, an equipment shelf, and even an architectural library. “The space was about cleverSPIN’s message: smart and fun,” Kris Kemmerer explains. “The colors match our business cards and, most importantly, our Ikea shopping spree was cost effective. Everything chosen for the space was to help us work the way we want to work. For example, Linda [Wallack] and I enjoyed working at her dining room table prior to the new space. We did not want to lose that feeling, so we selected an adjustable conference table (PRIORITETE, $79.95) and we did not forget about the footstools (PALLBO, $29.95).”
Where Do You Put the Cables?
CleverSPIN’s office goes beyond paint colors. It is equipped with advanced technology to allow all personnel to be wireless at all times. That is correct - cleverSPIN can even print without being connected to a cable (okay, sometimes they have to recharge the laptops). But the technology did not cost a fortune. Jamie Kemmerer is candid, “We have been able to do more with 5-year-old hardware than most companies can do with $50,000 worth of equipment.”
It is a Good Start.
As a start-up, the new space provides cleverSPIN with the opportunity to lay its initial groundwork. “Without a huge cost,” Wallack explains, “the office provides all of us with the proper mindset. CleverSPIN is, and will be, bigger than our dining room.” Undoubtedly, the owners know their work could be completed out of their homes but, with the new space, cleverSPIN will be taken a little more seriously… even with a hot pink wall.
